Commercial Truck Driver Training

Objective

Driving commercial motor vehicles requires advanced knowledge and skills that are often acquired through formal occupational training at the postsecondary level. The objective of the Commercial Truck Driver Training Program is to provide quality career education and introduce students to the procedures and skills found in the commercial driving industry. Through such training, students learn how to operate a commercial vehicle safely, develop the necessary occupational skills to not only to take and pass the required tests for obtaining a commercial driver’s license (CDL) but also to gain more in-depth knowledge, experience, and skills to drive a greater variety of commercial vehicles. Upon successful completion of the program and obtaining the CDL, graduates are prepared to seek entry-level employment in the commercial driving industry.

Description

The Commercial Truck Driver Training program is intended to develop technical knowledge and practical skills required for driving commercial vehicles that exceed the weight limit of 26,001 lbs. This diploma program provides comprehensive training to prepare students to take and pass the commercial driver’s license tests for the state in which they reside. In this advanced commercial driving program with additional educational hours, students gain more knowledge of occupational wellness, money management, and professional attitude and reliability. Students will also have extensive practice in actual driving and gain formal occupational endorsements for driving tractors with double trailers, triple trailers, and tanks.

Credentialing Exams

1. The CDL Learner’s Permit exam – this is the test that students take to get the learner’s permit which then allows us to take them out on the road for training. The fee for this permit/exam varies by state, and sometimes varies within a state, depending upon how much longer you have until the regular driver’s license expires.
2. The CDL exam – this is the test that students take at the end of the program to obtain their Commercial Driver’s License. This fee can vary by state and, in some cases, may be at the discretion of the school. For example, the Lester and Pittsburgh campuses are CDL test sites for the state of Pennsylvania, so they test their own students. Two (2) Attempts at the CDL exam are included within the tuition, with additional attempts beyond 2 charged at $150.

Career Opportunities

Upon successful passing of the required CDL tests, graduates of the program are prepared to seek entry-level employment in the trucking industry with companies of varied size and work as a commercial driver with or without additional training.

Note: United States Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations require that all Commercial Driver License holders must be able to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the public, understand highway traffic signs and signals, respond to official inquiries, and complete necessary reports.
