This course provides foundation knowledge of organic and biological chemistry and nutrition. Topics include the fundamentals of molecular compounds and an overview of the structure of organic molecules, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The processes of energy acquisition and protein synthesis are emphasized. This course includes a lab component.

This course provides a study of the morphology and function of the human dentitions, the anatomy of the hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity, and concepts related to occlusion. The anatomy of the head and neck is reviewed in context with the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity.

This course provides a study of the anatomy of the hard and soft tissues in the oral cavity, head and neck region. Anatomical studies will focus on the skeletal, muscular, vascular, and nervous systems. The student will also study the temporomandibular joint.

This course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge to develop basic skills necessary for the practice of dental hygiene. This course provides a study of the embryologic development of the head, face and oral cavity. Histologic structure of the oral tissues with relation to their clinical form and function are also examined.

This course is designed to study the periodontium in healthy and diseased states. Areas of discussion include the tissues and microscopic anatomy of the periodontium, the etiology of periodontal disease and host response.

This course is designed to study Periodontal Diseases and their local contributing factors. Emphasis is placed on the assessment and treatment of these conditions.

This course prepares students to recognize and manage medical emergencies in a dental office. Didactic emphasis is placed on prevention through the use of medical histories, and the team approach to emergency situations. This course also provides for the development of the knowledge and clinical skills required to provide oral health care services. Students will provide oral health care services in a supervised clinical setting.

This course provides for the continuing development of the knowledge and skills required to provide oral health care services. Didactic emphasis is placed on the management of the special needs patient and the role of pain control in dental hygiene care. Students will provide oral health care services in a supervised clinical setting.

This lecture, and laboratory course is designed to familiarize the dental hygiene student with commonly used materials in dentistry. The focus is on properties, proper technique of manipulation, and influence of manipulation upon these properties.

This lecture, and laboratory course is a continuation of DH170. The laboratory sessions focus on the techniques for placing and finishing restorations, manipulation and placement of pit and fissure sealants, and identifying and use of materials for dental implants. Lectures are coordinated with laboratory topics.

This course examines the process of disease, with emphasis on general pathology. Curricular content includes inflammation, regeneration, repair, immunity, neoplasia, developmental, hereditary, and congenital disorders, endocrine disorders, cardiovascular disease, blood diseases, and respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurologic, and skeletal disorders.

This course examines the process of disease with emphasis on oral pathology. Curricular content includes vesicles, ulcers, lesions in shades of red and purple, white lesions, pigmented lesions, raised lesions, soft and hard tissue enlargements, radiopaque lesions, radiolucent lesions, abnormalities of the teeth, HIV and AIDS and skin lesions.

This course provides for the continuing development of the knowledge and skills required to provide oral health care services. Didactic emphasis is placed on ethical and legal principles in dental hygiene care and the management of the special needs patient. Students will provide oral health care services in a supervised clinical setting.

This course reviews previous course knowledge of orofacial anatomy, physiology and pathology and provides the students with knowledge of orofacial anesthetic pain management. This includes the appropriate protocols for the planning and management of the administration of local anesthetics in the dental office.

This course provides refinement of the knowledge and skills required to provide oral health care services. Didactic emphasis is placed on the management of special needs patients and ethical decision making in dentistry. Student will provide preventative oral health care services in a supervised clinical setting.

This course is designed for dental hygiene students to study the physiology, interactions, and effects of drugs. Emphasis is placed on drugs commonly used and/or encountered in dental practice.

This course is designed for dental hygiene students to study the physiology, interactions and effects of drugs. Emphasis is placed on antibiotic prophylaxis used in dentistry, antifungal agents, local anesthetics and the management of pain control within the dental office.

This course prepares students to complete radiographic analysis of the periodontium and evidence based periodontal care. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of systemic conditions to the initiation and proliferation of periodontal diseases, chemical agents used in the treatment of periodontal disease, and periodontal maintenance.

This course prepares students to relate conditions and therapies of periodontal disease to the dental hygiene practice. Areas of discussion include occlusion, TMD, dental implants, periodontal surgery, wound healing and periodontal emergencies.

This course examines the role of nutrition as the foundation for overall general and oral health. Nutritional requirements for various age groups and rudiments of diet counseling are discussed.

This course is designed to expand the student’s knowledge and clinical skills, enabling them to render comprehensive oral health care services. Didactic emphasis is placed on complete oral health care utilizing case-based methodology. Clinical emphasis is placed on the behavioral management of pain and anxiety through the administration of local anesthesia. Students will provide preventative oral health care services in a supervised clinical setting.

This course is designed to expand the students’ knowledge and clinical skills, introducing them to advanced periodontal instrumentation. Didactic emphasis is placed on complete oral health care utilizing case-based methodology, practice management, and communication. Students will provide preventative oral health care services in a supervised clinical setting.

This course gives students a basic orientation to the principles of community oral health planning and practice. The hygienist’s role as an educator and resource person for the community will be emphasized. Students will expand their knowledge and skills necessary to promote health care in the community.

This course is a continuation of DH250. Public health research and statistics are explored. Students will learn how to use various dental indices as research tools. Dental health education lesson plans for all ages will be constructed and presented. Laboratory sessions will include presentations to various ages at schools, nursing homes, and community centers.

This seminar and clinic course is designed to encourage critical thinking and independent clinical work. Students will utilize case studies which incorporate multiple subject areas to enhance their critical thinking skills. Didactic emphasis is placed on review of dental and dental hygiene sciences and their application to the practice of dental hygiene. Students will provide oral health care services in a supervised advanced clinical setting while increasing their ability to work as an independent clinician.

Didactic emphasis is on a review of complete oral health care, licensing requirements, and practice management. Students will provide oral health care services in a supervised advanced clinical setting.
